Dalston Hall

A fortified hall of around 1500, raised on a medieval peel tower, and graded among the few of its rank in private hands.

Stockbridge acquired Dalston Hall in 2022 and holds it within The Gilchrist Collection, in the Cumbrian countryside.

Provenance

Dalston Hall began around 1500 as a fortified peel tower and baronial hall, with a west wing added in 1556. The Dalston family held it for generations. During the first English Civil War Sir George Dalston was forced to flee when the hall was requisitioned as a Covenanters’ headquarters during the Siege of Carlisle.

In 1897 Edmund Wright Stead carried out an extensive refurbishment of the interior and the entrance front. A prominent antiquarian of the day described the result as a magnificent mansion surpassing perhaps even its ancient glories. It was listed Grade II* in 1984.

The Grounds

Landscaped grounds surround the hall, with a stone gazebo overlooking the lawns.

Within

The Baronial Hall, of exceptional architectural character beneath high ceilings, a grand gallery and a chandelier, serves as the principal room. The Garden Dining Room opens through full patio doors to the gardens. The house holds eleven bedrooms.

Stockbridge holds Dalston Hall for the long term, a Grade II* house maintained and stewarded rather than realised.
